Want to learn a bit about our Waste Water Treatment?
Keypoint SA is proud to be part of Eco Tanks’ new Big Red – A new concept in wastewater treatment, using, tried and tested engineering know-how. After years of treating wastewater with their combination of old school underground septic and conservancy tanks, clever plumbing and mechanical know how, the team at Eco Tanks felt a need to respond to the demand for a packaged solution. They embarked on combining all the parts and processes of their successful wastewater treatment plants into one ‘plug & play’ unit, and made it available to South Africa in a fully modular packaged wastewater treatment plant, off-the-shelf and ready to install. Take quick look of how it works.
Who would benefit from a Big Red Wastewater Treatment System?
The Big Red Biological Wastewater Treatment System is ideal for guest lodges, remote estates, rural schools, clinics, hospital and urban developments. With flowrates from 1lL/day – 400kL/day there are options for domestic plants from 4 people to 12 people (garden cottages to large homes small guest houses) to commercial and industrial systems of up to 2000 people.
Choosing a Big Red Biological wastewater treatment plant helps to reduce you or your company’s carbon footprint and further conserve, our valuable natural water resource, while protecting fragile and delicate ecosystems across the country. In many instances, installing these systems save our client’s money by reducing their municipal water spend.

How does the wastewater treatment system work?
The overall objective of the wastewater treatment plant is to provide a wastewater treatment system capable of treating a wide range of likely wastewater conditions, while complying with the performance requirements to meet or exceed the Department of Water and Sanitation’s requirements. The BIG RED® Process treats industrial or domestic wastewater in three steps:
- Anaerobic Digestion
- Aerobic Digestion
- Clarification and Disinfection
The anaerobic section reduces BOD loading of the waste stream up to 40% and provides a suitable retention time for further removal of organic solids. Multi-chambered septic tanks are used in this process. The aerobic section further reduces BOD and other harmful environmental elements.
The unit adopts the nutrient removal process – the conversion of nitrates and nitrites from the waste stream to nitrogen – a natural and safe occurring element. Lastly, the disinfection process kills any remaining pathogens, such as E. coli and fecal coliforms in the waste stream to provide a clarified effluent ready for any non-potable reuse options. Reuse options include irrigation, car washing and dust control, toilet flushing etc.
Primary Treatment
Done in the custom designed, multi-chambered anaerobic reactors. The liquid capacity of these tanks is determined by the number of users connected to the unit. The anaerobic treatment process occurs in enclosed tanks to prevent access to oxygen. Here, solids are intercepted and biologically broken down by anaerobic microorganisms that are in contact with the waste stream. The longer this takes the better least twenty-four hours retention is required. The longer retention time translates into a higher quality effluent with significant biological, oxygen demand (BOD) reduction occurring before it flows into the biological reactor for secondary treatment.
Secondary Treatment
Achieved in the aerobic biological reactor. In this process, oxygen is introduced into the reactor. The design of the secondary treatment process allows the wastewater to circulate and keep the biomass in suspension. Well-engineered bio-media with a large surface area is added to the bioreactor to facilitate the removal of organic solids and aid the nitrogen cycle. The system uses moving bed bioreactor technology. The micro-organisms metabolize the organic material into carbon dioxide and other environmentally stable end products.
Tertiary Treatment
Is a settlement and disinfection process. The treated wastewater is subjected to chlorination on the domestic treatment plants and ozone treatment on the larger and custom-built plants as a precautionary measure against pathogens that may have passed on from the second stage. This is effective due to the retention time and ensures ultimate pathogen neutralization. This is achieved with a pumping chamber that has a storage capacity of 1500 litres before being discharged for reuse. A little summary of the wastewater treatment plant
- The BIG RED® is a package “Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant”.
- The plant is designed for “domestic and/or industrial wastewater”.
- Influent is gravity fed from the house into the WWTP.
- This influent enters the primary tanks. These tanks act as “septic tanks” also known as the anaerobic or anoxic zone tanks. Here bacteria are at work breaking down the waste stream (organic matter) into a simpler state.
- As the new influent enters the plant, the stream is automatically (gravity fed / free flow) moved along into the next tank. This is the aerobic bio-reactor. Here air (oxygen) is introduced into the stream where particular bacteria continue the degradation of the waste stream.
- In this “zone”, these specialized bacteria require mainly 3 things – food, housing and oxygen. The stream containing organic matter is the “food”, the bio media is the “house”, and the aerators/diffusers supply the “oxygen”. If those elements are all in equilibrium and sufficient, the performance of the system and the resultant quality of the treated effluent will be greatly improved.
- From here, the influent moves into the penultimate tank where any “uneaten matter or missed matter” is re-directed by internal pumps and pipes back to the anoxic zone so the process can start all over again, kind of a back-up plan.
- Finally, the treated stream enters the last tank known as the Pump/Disinfection Chamber. This chamber is fitted with a submersible discharge pump connected to a float switch. As the stream reaches a certain volume in the tank, the pump activates and discharges through the in-line chlorinators and out via the sprinklers.
